There has always been something special about Clif Bar’s variations. You can choose from a wide variety of chocolate chip flavours, crunchy peanut butter flavour, oatmeal raisin walnut flavour, blueberry crisp flavour, chocolate almond fudge flavour, and white chocolate macadamia flavour, in addition to the new coconut chocolate chip flavour.

The fat content of each bar is 6g, along with 38g of carbohydrate (21g of which are sugars), so you get a total of 60g of fat per bar. I was surprised to find out that such a large amount of energy can be obtained from a bar that weighs only 68 grams – it is very portable so you could carry three in a normal sized jersey pocket.

Sugars with a high glycaemic index (GI) can help you get back to your energy level after a slump very easily whereas carbohydrate with a low GI can assist in extending the release of energy. This means that you will feel satisfied for a longer period of time. Almost everyone would find the size of the bar perfect if they wanted to use it as a healthier option.

Furthermore, each of these bars contains 10 grams of protein as well (which is considerably more than the majority of energy bars available today). A protein’s breakdown and digestion takes longer than that of a simple sugar, which is one of the reasons why protein also helps to stave off hunger in the short term. Further, when you feed your system with a small amount of protein during your ride, you are providing your body with the amino acids it needs to support recovery and maintain lean muscle during what, at the end of the day, is a very catabolic (breaking down muscles) and exhausting task. It’s not like I would give up my post-training recovery shake for these, but using them during my rides can only be helpful in improving my recovery.

As a matter of fact, one of the things I really like about these bars (for the record, they aren’t rectangular bars; they are more of a rounded cookie in shape) is the fact that they are rich in micronutrients. In addition to vitamins B6 and B12, there are also vitamins A, C, D, and E available and these vitamins play an important role in promoting energy release and general wellbeing. In addition to the calcium and magnesium contained in this energy bar, you will also find helpings of niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin, which makes this one of the most rounded energy bars I have ever seen.

So, by bringing a top-notch vitamin profile to the table, a taxing effort in the saddle is complemented by a top-notch vitamin profile, which in turn helps boost immunity as well as improve energy release, recovery and appetite control. Despite the fact that it’s always difficult to quantify performance on the bike, I can report that I was consistently able to perform well while using these bars, and thanks to the numerous flavour options I had available to me, I never suffered from ‘test fatigue’ during my time on the bike.

As you ride along, you will encounter repeated changes in temperature, so the packaging is of a good quality and easy to open, and the bars sit well in your pockets as you ride. It is also important to point out that the texture is very good regardless of the flavour you choose – there is no excess grease or oil, yet the bars are not too dry either. There was nothing unusual about me taking a swig of water whenever I ate one of those bars, but I always did it no matter what bar I ate.
