Over sixty health conditions are thought to be caused by free radicals, including aging, cancer, and atherosclerosis. It’s possible to reduce free radical-related health problems by reducing exposure to free radicals and eating more antioxidants. Free radicals come from oxygen, which is essential for life.

The environment is also a source of free radicals. Ionizing radiation (from industry, sun, cosmic rays, and medical X-rays) is one source of free radicals. Heavy metals (such as mercury, cadmium, and lead), cigarette smoke (both active and passive), alcohol, unsaturated fat, and other substances from food, water, and air can all cause free radicals.
