Recently, there has been a lot of talk about a new concept called the metaverse. What is the Metaverse, what technologies will drive it, and what challenges might it address? The term metaverse has been around since the 1990s, but it’s only recently that the buzzword has attracted media attention thanks to big companies like Facebook. Simply put, the Metaverse is the concept of bringing the Internet and all of its associated technologies to the world around us. Of course, we all have a smartphone in our pocket that gives us access to the Internet, and most of us depend on the Internet for at least one vital fact (bills, rent, email).
The Metaverse, however, is more about bridging the gap between real life and the Internet using augmented reality. To better understand what the Metaverse is, let us paint a picture of what it might look like. In the Metaverse, users could wear devices that display augmented information about their surroundings and interact with that information.
Augmented objects in real life would add a new dimension to reality while giving the Internet an existence in the real world. In many ways, the Metaverse can be thought of as an online game that augments itself in real life, allowing players to interact with each other both physically and digitally.
However, an important aspect of the Metaverse is that the augmented world that users see is shared by all. This means that data can be easily shared, augmented objects can interact with any connected user, and users can instantly receive information about other users.
What technologies will power the metaverse? For the metaverse to work, it will rely heavily on augmented reality, Internet connectivity and user data.
Augmented reality is any technology that overlays a digital environment on top of a physical environment that the user can interact with. As such, augmented reality relies heavily on wearable display technologies that can combine live video with digital elements.
Alternatively, augmented reality systems can use transparent displays that allow users to see the world around them while displaying digital information, or glass that can reflect a digital projection directly into the user’s eyes. Xiaomi’s technology can do this with minimal disruption to the wearer, but other companies such as Facebook and Apple are also working on such technology.
Internet connectivity will play a critical role in the Metaverse. It will come down to devices being connected in real time to data centers that allow data to be exchanged between users. For computers, this is not a challenge thanks to fiber optic cables, but mobile devices will rely on high-speed, long-range wireless networks. Therefore, the Metaverse will most likely depend on mobile technologies such as 5G and 6G, which will provide high-speed, low-latency, high-bandwidth connectivity to many thousands of simultaneously connected devices.
User data will also be critical to the Metaverse, as it will help evolve the technology at all levels. User experience and feedback will help improve the quality of enhanced systems, while user interactivity will drive Metaverse users to create services for use by others.
What challenges might the metaverse bring? As with any technology, engineers and researchers alike should be cautious and consider the consequences such a technology could bring. In the case of the metaverse, there are some important areas that need to be seriously considered,
especially when it comes to privacy and security. In terms of security, the metaverse closely links real life with virtual and augmented worlds. While this dimension of reality will be found in headsets and silicon French fries, it could lead to real devices and systems being affected by the metaverse.
For example, hackers could use the widespread integration of the technology for their own purposes, such as stealing personal data, stalking, data mining, and gaining unauthorized access to protected areas.
Privacy would be another major concern for users, as an augmented reality device would be tantamount to a surveillance device. Such a wearable would have camera capabilities, know the user’s exact location, and store details about them.
In addition, the Metaverse would identify others, as each user must be a uniquely identifiable connection (similar to an IP address). This means that a headset could be used to track and locate people against their will. People using camera equipment with Metaverse services and hardware could potentially be used for data mining.
Overall, the Metaverse could usher in a new technological revolution by connecting all aspects of life with Internet technologies. However, this technology can be easily corrupted, and users should be cautious when choosing to use the Metaverse.
