With LG’s new Tone Free FP true wireless earbuds, you can use the right earbud as a dedicated microphone during conversations by holding it next to your mouth. A privacy-conscious feature, it allows you to speak loudly enough without having to worry about the earbuds picking up the sound.
These three new earbuds share a lot of the same specifications as the FP5, FP8, and FP9. Each earbud features three microphones and an IPX4 water resistance rating to withstand light splashes. They’re 4.4mm shorter than LG’s previous earbuds, and they’ve got better drivers and diaphragms, so LG says they have more bass without losing clarity.

The headphones do, however, offer some features that are exclusive to one or two of them. With the USB-C to aux cable, the case can be connected to anything from a gaming console to an in-flight entertainment system, eliminating the need to use a separate Bluetooth adapter. The PI7 earbuds from Bowers and Wilkins were similar earlier this year. A bacteria-killing UV technology in LG’s FP8 and FP9 earbuds kills 99.9 percent of bacteria on the speaker mesh in five minutes, reducing the risk of inner ear infections.
In addition, these earbuds have better battery life than the FP5, allowing them to run for 10 hours on a charge, or up to 24 hours with their charging case (the FP5 is rated for 8 and 22 hours). There is only one model of the FP8 that supports wireless charging. A price has not yet been announced for LG’s new true wireless earbuds, which will be available starting this month in “key markets”.
