The ultimate goal of many AI specialists is to create an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).  The use of an artificial intelligence agent could be leveraged to solve a variety of problems facing the world today. An AGI agent, for example, could be introduced to a problem and it could make real-life decisions based on deep reinforcement learning and its newly introduced emergent consciousness.

As opposed to a regular algorithm, an AGI is capable of asking itself the important questions. It is possible for an artificial intelligence to formulate the end solution it wishes to achieve, simulate hypothetical approaches to achieve that goal, and then decide which simulated reality matches the goals most closely.

Since 1956, when the term “artificial intelligence” was introduced at the Dartmouth conference, the debate on how an AGI might emerge has existed. In the years since then, many companies have attempted to tackle the challenge of artificial intelligence, and OpenAI is probably the most well-known of them all. As a non-profit organization, OpenAI was founded on December 11, 2015 with the mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence (AGI)-by which we mean highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at the most economically valuable tasks-benefits all of humanity.

The mission statement for OpenAI clearly outlines the benefits that an AGI can bring to society. There is a sudden ability to address issues which were previously beyond the capabilities of humans and regular artificial intelligence systems. The potential benefits of releasing an artificial intelligence are enormous. AGI could be programmed to scan all current research in all languages with the aim of curing all forms of cancer.

Using the AGI, the problem of formulating solutions can be initiated and then all possible outcomes can be simulated. The goal would be to combine the benefits of consciousness that humans currently possess with the infinite capabilities of the cloud, to use deep learning to recognize patterns in this big data, and to use reinforcement learning to simulate different environments/outcomes. Additionally, the consciousness does not require a rest period and can remain 100% focused on the task at hand at all times.

You cannot understate the potential downsides of artificial intelligence. For instance, you can have an artificial intelligence that has the objective of continuously upgrading itself and is able to swallow everything in its path in order to maximize the computing resources and atoms required to maintain its system for a lifetime. This theory was explored in detail by Professor Nick Bostrom in the Paperclip Maximizer argument, in which a misconfigured artificial intelligence is instructed to produce paperclips and does so until everything on Earth is consumed in order to maximize paperclip production.

A more pragmatic perspective is that an AGI may be controlled by a rogue state or an unethical corporation. In this case, with poor programming and no remorse, this entity would be able to program the AGI to maximize profits by bankrupting competitors, destroying supply chains, hacking the stock market, liquidating bank accounts, etc. An AGI should, therefore, be programmed with a code of ethics from the beginning. Codes of ethics have been debated by many minds and Isaac Asimov first introduced the concept to the general population in the form of the 3 laws of robotics.

As the 3 laws of robotics can be interpreted in different ways, there are some problems. The day Brain Simulator II is released to the general public is April 7, 2020. It is important to add programming ethics into an artificial intelligence. The current version of the brain simulator permits experimentation with diverse AI algorithms in order to create an end-to-end AGI system that incorporates modules for vision, hearing, robotic control, learning, internal modeling, and even planning, imagination, and forethought.

AGI can be achieved by developing new, unique algorithms that directly address cognition.
